Why am I always late to the shuttle?
You may feel slow even when you can run quickly. In badminton, when you start moving and what happens after the previous shot can matter as much as speed.
Ask about training
Watch the moment before the chase
Check whether you are still admiring your shot when the opponent hits. A split step is a small preparation timed around their contact; it is not a large jump performed at a fixed rhythm. Your base position also changes with the rally. Returning to the painted centre every time can leave you poorly placed.
Practise one route with a useful return
Choose one corner first. Move, make a controlled contact and recover to a position where you can respond again. Slow the feed if the lunge becomes a reach with no stable landing. A clean outward movement followed by a rushed return is only half of the task.
Add choice before adding more speed
When one route feels comfortable, use two possible directions. This tests your response rather than your ability to memorise a pattern. Increase pace only while the landing and recovery remain controlled. Training should help you arrive with options, not just touch the shuttle at the last moment.
What to check during training
During training, a useful starting point is a short observation task: a few controlled shots, a simple movement pattern, then a rally. This helps separate a technique problem from a task that is simply too difficult at the current level. Work on one change at a time and check whether it still works when the feed becomes less predictable.
Questions learners ask
Should I just run more laps?
General fitness can support training, but laps do not teach the timing, direction changes and recovery needed in a rally.
Is the centre always my base?
No. A useful base depends on your shot, the opponent’s position and whether you are playing singles or doubles.
