Professional Badminton Foundation Level 1 (PBF Level 1)
The Professional Badminton Foundation Level 1 (PBF Level 1) is a structured certification programme designed for students who want a correct start in badminton. Unlike casual recreational classes, this system uses a formal syllabus with skills tests, theory exams, and practical assessments. While our training base is in Malaysia, this foundation certificate is recognised within our international training system, serving students from Singapore, Australia, and across Asia (Thailand, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, Korea) who seek a rigorous badminton education.
Professional Badminton Foundation Level 1 (PBF Level 1)
Professional Badminton Foundation Level 1 (PBF Level 1) is our academy’s internationally recognised foundation certification
When you see this certificate beside a student’s name, it means that player has:
Completed a full foundation syllabus, not just casual classes
Passed all practical tests for grip, stance, footwork, split step and basic strokes
Passed the theory exam on rules, scoring, court areas and safety
Shows safe movement habits that protect joints like knee, ankle and wrist
Shows good training attitude – focused, coachable and willing to correct mistakes
Reached an international Badminton foundation standard recognised across Malaysia, Singapore, Australia and Asian regions
Ready to continue to higher levels without restarting from zero basics
In short, this certificate is proof that the student has a clean, reliable international level badminton foundation in both theory and practical, and is ready to move on to higher-level training.
The PBF Level Roadmap from Beginner to Competition
Foundation Roadmap – Beginner to Competition Ready
A clear 3-stage plan so parents know exactly how their child will progress in Professional Badminton Foundation Level 1.
Grip, Footwork & Movement Basics
Students learn how to hold the racket, stand in base position and move with safe, simple footwork. We correct bad habits early, protect the wrist, elbow, knee and ankle, and build a stable movement foundation.
Stroke Control, Consistency & Simple Game Ideas
Players combine movement with basic strokes, learn how to recover after each shot, and start to understand where to hit and where to stand. Sport science concepts like rhythm, timing and balance are introduced.
Fitness, Mental Readiness & Test Preparation
Training adds more multi-shuttle drills, basic fitness and simple mental routines. Students learn to apply skills under light pressure and prepare for the PBF Level 1 theory and practical certification tests.
1.1 Certification Overview
What is the PBF Level 1 Certification?
Professional Badminton Foundation Level 1 (PBF Level 1) is our academy’s structured foundation certification, not just a “you attended class” paper. It is the first step in our badminton foundation training system and is designed to check whether a student can really perform and understand the essential basics, not just hit a shuttle over the net.
Every student who aims to complete PBF Level 1 must pass both practical skill tests and simple theory tests. The practical side looks at grip, stance, basic footwork, and core strokes. The theory side checks their understanding of rules, safety, and basic tactics. Together, these form a clear PBF Level 1 syllabus that any serious coach can read and understand, whether they are coaching in Malaysia, Singapore, Australia or Asian regions such as Thailand, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan and Korea.
In short, this is a kids badminton certification (also open to motivated adults) that proves the student has a clean and stable foundation. It lets parents, students and coaches see clearly: “this player has been properly trained in the basics.”

Why Start with Professional Badminton Foundation Level 1?
Many badminton schools say they are “systematic”, but in reality they just divide classes by age and let children play games week after week. The kids may enjoy it, but their foundation is often weak and full of bad habits. When they try to improve later, they struggle because the basics were never fixed properly.
In PBF Level 1, we test every key skill on purpose. Testing forces the student to slow down, think about what they are doing, and correct mistakes early. When a student knows that grip, stance, or footwork will be checked, they pay more attention and stop relying only on “feeling” or strength.
The tests are not meant to create fear. They are there to give clarity and progress.
- Students see clearly which part is already stable.
- Parents see where their child still needs time and practice.
- Coaches can plan the next phase of training based on real performance, not guesswork.
This is why our badminton foundation training is different. We do not let students hide behind games. We help them face their skills honestly and grow step by step.

How the PBF Level 1 Syllabus is Structured
We design the PBF Level 1 syllabus like building a house. If the foundation is solid, the “upper floors” will be stable for many years.
We follow this structure:
- Base layer – Grip & Stance
How to hold the racket (forehand and backhand), how to stand, how to prepare the body before moving or hitting. - Movement layer – Footwork & Split Step
How to move safely to the front, side and back, how to land, and how to recover to the base position without stressing the knees and ankles. - Stroke layer – Clear, Drop, Net, Lift
How to hit basic strokes with the right contact point, swing path and body balance, instead of just using arm power. - Game layer – Service, Rules, Simple Rally Patterns
How to serve correctly, understand basic rules, and apply simple patterns (for example: serve–return–3rd shot).
Each layer has both practical tests and simple theory questions. Students learn how to do (body action on court) and why they must do it that way (safety, efficiency, long-term development). This structure applies to all our students in Malaysia and Singapore, and it is clear enough for coaches in Australia and other Asian countries to understand and continue from.

Who PBF Level 1 is Designed For
PBF Level 1 is designed for:
- Total beginners who are starting badminton for the first time.
- Normal kids, not only “very talented” ones.
- Older beginners or adults who feel their basics are weak or unstable.
We assume the student may not know anything at the beginning. The syllabus is written to guide them from zero knowledge to a stable basic level. Even if they have played “street badminton” with friends, we treat Level 1 as a chance to clean up unsafe or inefficient habits.
This certification also becomes a common language between coaches. When a child moves from Malaysia to Singapore, or from Singapore to Australia or another Asian country, the new coach can see “PBF Level 1 passed” and immediately understand what foundation the student has. It reduces confusion, saves time in assessment, and helps the student integrate faster into their new training environment.

Why PBF Level 1 Takes Around 1.5–2 Years
Real foundation cannot be rushed. Many places promise “fast improvement” in a few weeks, but the habits built there often do not hold under pressure or higher speed. Our experience shows that for most students, true Level 1 foundation takes about 1.5–2 years of regular training.
A typical journey looks like this:
- 0–6 months:
Focus on grip, stance, basic balance and very simple strokes. At this stage, students learn slowly and carefully, often with static drills. - 6–12 months:
Add structured footwork, more consistent swing mechanics, and simple combinations (for example: move–hit–recover). Students begin to rally with more control. - 1–2 years:
Build stability in all basic strokes, improve court coverage, and apply skills in simple game patterns. Students also prepare for the full PBF Level 1 practical and theory exam.
Passing PBF Level 1 means the student has really absorbed the basics, not just finished a term or semester. The aim is to give them a foundation that can support higher levels (PBF Level 2, competitive training, school team, and beyond), whether they continue in Malaysia, Singapore or another country.

How to Start PBF Level 1 in Malaysia
For ST Badminton Academy (STBA) students, the PBF Level 1 certification is already part of their normal training pathway. As they progress through the syllabus, they will automatically be prepared and scheduled for the theory and practical tests.
For international students or temporary / short-term students (for example from Singapore, Australia, Hong Kong, Korea, Japan, etc.), PBF Level 1 is not automatic. They will need to apply separately for assessment and testing, so that we can confirm their current level and arrange a suitable test date.
